The purpose of this article is to illuminate the conceptualisations and applications of the Belmont Report’s key ethical principles of respect for persons, beneficence, and justice based on a document analysis of five of the most relevant disciplinary guidelines on internet research in the social sciences. These seminal documents are meant to provide discipline-specific guidance for research design and implementation and are regarded as key references when conducting research online. Our analysis revealed that the principles of respect and beneficence were (...) explicitly conveyed in the documents analysed, offering nuanced interpretations on issues of informed consent, privacy, and benefits and risks as well as providing recommendations for modifying traditional practices to fit the online setting. However, the invocations of the principle of justice were rather implicit and reflect an important shift from the Belmont Report’s protectionist ethical position towards more situational and dialogic approaches. With the rapidly evolving nature of internet technologies, this analysis is projected to contribute to the ongoing developments in research ethics in the social sciences by outlining the tensions and implications of the use of the internet as a methodological tool. We also seek to provide recommendations on how disciplinary associations can proceed to facilitate ethically sensitive internet research. (shrink)

Producing content-related gestures has been found to impact students’ learning, whether such gestures are spontaneously generated by the learner in the course of problem-solving, or participants are instructed to pose based on experimenter instructions during problem-solving and word learning. Few studies, however, have investigated the effect of (a) performing instructed gestures while learning concepts or (b) producing gestures without there being an implied connection between the gestures and the concepts being learned. The two studies reported here investigate the impact of (...) instructed hand movements on students’ subsequent understanding of a concept. Students were asked to watch an instructional video—focused on the concept of statistical model—three times. Two experimental groups were given a secondary task to perform while watching the video, which involved moving their hands to mimic the placement and orientation of red rectangular bars overlaid on the video. Students were told that the focus of the study was multitasking, and that the instructed hand movements were unrelated to the material being learned. In the content-match group the placement of the hands reinforced the concept being explained, and in the content-mismatch group it did not. A control group was not asked to perform a secondary task. In both studies, findings indicate that students in the content-match group performed better on the posttest, and showed less variation in performance, than did students in the content-mismatch group, with control students falling in between. Instructed hand movement—even when presented as an unrelated, secondary task—can affect students’ learning of a complex concept. (shrink)

Public speakers like politicians carefully craft their words to maximize the clarity, impact, and persuasiveness of their messages. However, these messages can be shaped by more than words. Gestures play an important role in how spoken arguments are perceived, conceptualized, and remembered by audiences. Studies of political speech have explored the ways spoken arguments are used to persuade audiences and cue applause. Studies of politicians’ gestures have explored the ways politicians illustrate different concepts with their hands, but have not focused (...) on gesture's potential as a tool of persuasion. Our paper combines these traditions to ask first, how politicians gesture when using spoken rhetorical devices aimed at persuading audiences, and second, whether these gestures influence the ways their arguments are perceived. Study 1 examined two rhetorical devices—contrasts and lists—used by three politicians during U.S. presidential debates and asked whether the gestures produced during contrasts and lists differ. Gestures produced during contrasts were more likely to involve changes in hand location, and gestures produced during lists were more likely to involve changes in trajectory. Study 2 used footage from the same debates in an experiment to ask whether gesture influenced the way people perceived the politicians’ arguments. When participants had access to gestural information, they perceived contrasted items as more different from one another and listed items as more similar to one another than they did when they only had access to speech. This was true even when participants had access to only gesture (in muted videos). We conclude that gesture is effective at communicating concepts of similarity and difference and that politicians (and likely other speakers) take advantage of gesture's persuasive potential. Most accounts of “logical empiricism in America” take logical empiricism to be a monolithic, or at least a one-dimensional, philosophical group. This picture of logical empiricism has come under well-reasoned attack during the past two decades, but some of the relevant conclusions for the reception-history of the movement were not drawn, or were not drawn as thoroughly as they could have been. Thus, if we want to understand the reception of logical empiricism, we should not talk about the reception of (...) logical empiricism as such; rather, we should provide a more stratified and differently balanced account. This article aims to draw the contours of one more stratified account by pointing out differences in the reception-history of logical empiricism with respect to pragmatism in particular. Namely, I will examine and defend an account according to which the more pragmatist-naturalist wing of logical empiricism was welcomed by the majority of American pragmatists while the more technical wing came immediately under pragmatist attack from various sides. Eşʿarîliğin son aşamasını temsil eden Îcî’nin argümanları, ekoldeki geleneksel ve felsefî yaklaşımları yansıtmaktadır. Bu makale Îcî’nin Muʿtezile’nin ahlâkî realizmine karşı kullandığı temel argümanlarını sunmaktadır. Çalışmanın amacı Îcî’nin argümanlarını değiştirmeden sağlam bir şekilde sunmak, açıklamak, itirazları tartışmak ve sonunda güçlü ve zayıf yönlerini değerlendirmektir. Makalenin amacı Muʿtezile’nin argümanlarını açıklamak değildir; yine de Îcî’nin argümanlarını daha net anlamak için bazı açıklamalar yapmaktadır. Makalenin ilk kısmında Eşʿarîler ile Muʿtezile’nin ahlâk anlayışları arasında belirgin bir çizgi çizmektedir. Tartışma noktasını belirtip kelâmî argümanlar için zemin hazırlamaktadır. (...) Drawing on Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault, Tom Conley writes that a diagram that depends upon the division between the visible and the enunciable may be comprehended in terms of a map and as a line of forces. Such strata can (...) act as signposts for diverse and multilateral readings of film, as viewers “read” cinematic landscapes and time-images. In Ici et ailleurs, stratigraphic shots juxtapose the Western, static home life of a family in France with the nomadic life of Fedayeen troops in Jordan and Palestine. La philosophie de la religion n'est pas une discipline parmi d'autres. Sa courte histoire d'à peine trois siècles témoigne des états de la raison moderne et plus généralement de la modernité elle-même, si celle-ci peut se définir par les relations de la pensée à ses enracinements religieux, par les rapports de la raison à la croyance et à l'institution religieuse. Produit des Lumières, mais tout autant première réaction inquiète, romantique ou rétrograde, au projet d'une émancipation radicale par rapport au religieux (...) dont les Lumières semblaient l'achèvement, la philosophie de la religion a représenté le lieu essentiel où la raison moderne est venue se réfléchir, réfléchir son histoire et son opération, ce que la pensée occidentale avait fait de son lien à la religion, ce qu'elle allait ou devait en faire. C'est dire que sa démarche ne procédait pas simplement d'une curiosité intellectuelle à l'égard d'un objet parmi d'autres, fût-il l'objet "suprême" : son enjeu était rien moins que la nature de la modernité elle-même. Elle y traduisait les exigences de la raison occidentale, peut-être son besoin ; elle décidait d'une solution qui lui donne une assise ; elle en montrait le visage, dans ses dimensions épistémologiques, métaphysiques, morales, politiques. Cet enracinement dans les besoins de l'époque, les intérêts premiers de la raison, dans la nécessité aussi d'interpréter ce qui arrive à la modernité occidentale dans son rapport à la religion, continue d'en légitimer, aujourd'hui plus que jamais, l'exercice : c'est sa raison d'être. Or le noeud de cette intrigue, le centre polémique de ces rapports entre raison et religions que veut clarifier et traiter la philosophie de la religion, c'est la question de la vérité. Comme si son exercice était en définitive le prolongement technique et surtout le renouvellement de la question qu'un procurateur romain posait à un individu qui se proclamait lui-même la vérité : "Qu'est-ce que la vérité?" Cette question interroge la religion en deux sens : elle interroge pour savoir si la religion est vraie mais aussi pour savoir ce qu'est le vrai selon elle qui en fait également sa valeur suprême. Mais ce faisant, c'est bien la raison philosophique qui se pose à elle-même cette question : Qu'est-ce que la vérité pour toi, c'est-à-dire pour nous? Pour se poser une telle question, et la poser de manière si décisive à la religion, il faut qu'elle ait gardé un peu de son intérêt. Or cette question nous intéresse-t-elle encore? Dans notre modernité tardive que certains nomment postmoderne, tenons-nous encore à la vérité? C'est cette question qui est au centre de la philosophie de la religion. (shrink)

Jusqu'ici ignoré, ce nouveau venu n'enrichit pas seulement notre connaissance de l'optique des géomètres du milieu du IXesiècle, mais aussi celle de l'antiquité tardive. Ce premier commentaire connu de l'Optiqued'Euclide soulève à nouveau la question des traditions textuelles de ce traité, de leur multiplicité, du rôle de Théon d'Alexandrie; il pose aussi le (...) problème de la survie de la pensée d'al-Kindī à travers ses successeurs, comme Ahmad ibn 'Īsā.
